SW & Gert Burger's trip to Vilanculos, Mozambique

I had to do an installation at a new SASOL residential site in Vilanculos and invited my brother Gert to come with. We left Nelspruit on Tuesday, 15 February and took the dirt road between Moamba and Magude to avoid the Maputo traffic. We spent the first night at Complexo Palmeiras, Bilene. We are familiar with the place, as we have camped there before with our families. We booked into the same campsite. It has nice campsites with clean ablution facilities. The lagoon is magnificent. The next day we left for Vilanculos. From the town of Macia the road was in a terrible state with potholes and roadworks. The resurfacing of the road might take a few more months, but then it will be a pleasure to drive there.

Late Wednesday afternoon we booked into Vilanculos Campsite, virtually on the beach. Nice campsite with ablutions and security. I worked on the site till Saturday morning, but had some chance in the early mornings and late afternoons to put the kayak onto the extremely calm sea. We enjoyed the place, the fishmongers, restaurant. Laurentina Preta was our favourite drink.

The Saturday night we booked into Morrungulo campsite, and immediately made friends with two dogs who accompanied us on the beach walks and guarded our campsite at night. On Sunday morning we left Morrungulo and again took the dirt road at Magude along the Rio do Incomati.

Vilanculos is a beautiful place, not too crowded, the calm and warm sea, the islands that can be explored, but with the current road conditions one needs more than a long weekend to do this 800km trip from home.
